The large two-panelled oak Memorial Board (above) in St Paul’s Church was designed by architect B.D. Cancellor who lived in Weeke. It cost just over £177 (about £5,000 today) with fundraising starting in early 1919. The memorial is believed to have been unveiled in November 1922. It is situated below the memorial window to Kathleen Gould, daughter of Charles Gould, parish rector from 1900 to 1915, and sister of 2nd Lieutenant Henry Gould. Henry was killed in the Great War and his name appears on the Memorial Board. His biography also appears in this book.

The men whose names are carved on the Memorial Board are simply listed alphabetically without their military rank. The clear message is that they are all equal before God.

St Matthew's Church Memorial

St Matthew’s Church holds a red Memorial Book (above) that lists 90 men who died in the Great War. It was probably compiled after the Second World War. The only name on the St Paul’s Memorial Board that does not appear in the Memorial Book is Harold Forster. The reason is unclear.

No record has yet been found for H.T. Chapman who is listed only in the Memorial Book. It is believed that the entry is an error and should read F.J. Chapman whose name comes before H.T. Churcher on the St Paul’s memorial.

St Matthew’s also has a memorial window to Captain Nicholas Hill who lived with his parents in nearby Butt’s Close. Nicholas’s father was an architect and probably designed the window. Nicholas won the Military Cross shortly before his death in 1917. He is listed on both memorials.

Other Memorials

Some of the 91 men are also listed on other Winchester memorials. These include the St Thomas Senior Church of England Boys’ School Memorial, which is now held at Kings School, the Winchester Diocesan Training College Memorial, now part of the University of Winchester, and the Peter Symonds School Memorial.
